Playoff Contenders
There are 8 teams left that I think have a good chance to make the playoffs:
- Tennessee 8-0
- Alabama 7-1
- Georgia 8-0
- Ohio State 8-0
- Michigan 8-0
- Clemson 8-0
- TCU 8-0
- Oregon 7-1
The four teams that end up making the playoffs will probably come from this group. However, there are three other teams that could make it under the right circumstances:
- UCLA 7-1
- USC 7-1
- Ole Miss 8-1
These three teams are good, and if they win out, they could make it.
The Path
Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, and Ole Miss all control their own destiny. If they win out, they’re in (if Ole Miss were to win out they would be 12-1 and have wins over both Alabama and either Georgia or Tennessee, so it would be pretty hard to leave them out).
Clemson, TCU, Oregon, UCLA, and USC are in similar situations. Do their strength of schedules stack up with the others? If Clemson won out, their best win would be against no. 22 Wake Forest. TCU would have their best win be against no. 15 Kansas State. It is hard to keep an undefeated conference champion out, but would they put them in over a 1 loss Georgia or Michigan? Oregon, UCLA, and USC all have a chance if they win out. They would be a 1-loss Pac 12 champion, and they would probably have to hope for several teams to lose ahead of them.
