Surprises
There are a lot of teams that played better than I expected in week 1, but the three teams that impressed me the most were Colorado, Florida State, and Washington.
Colorado
I was not expecting Colorado to be very good this season. They had so many new players, and they were playing at the defending national runner-ups. Their offense looked AMAZING. Shedeur Sanders was elite at QB. Travis Hunter played great on both sides of the ball and will be an immediate Heisman contender. Dylan Edwards look good out of the backfield as well. I did not include them in my top 25 for two reasons. Their defense looked bad, and I don’t think TCU is all that good of a win.
Florida State
Florida State took LSU to school in the second half of that game. Their offense was unstoppable, and the defense took care of business. Jordan Travis threw it to his amazing WRs with fantastic accuracy as he eluded LSU’s pass rushers. Florida State is a serious playoff contender now, especially with Clemson completely dropping the ball against Duke.
Washington
I thought Boise State was going to cover against them last week, and it looked like I was going to be right for the 1st quarter or so. Things changed. Something clicked for the Huskies in the second quarter, and Washington was DOMINANT for the rest of the game. Michael Penix Jr. is my Heisman favorite, and I am excited to see how this team does in Pac 12 play.
Dissapointments
A lot of teams did not meet my week 1 expectations. The three teams I’m picking for this week are Clemson, South Alabama, and Ohio State.
Clemson
I thought Clemson was a top 5 team. Clearly I was wrong. I do think the score was a little deceptive, as the Tigers had many chances to score, but how do you lose to Duke 28-7? Klubnik looked pretty good, but the receivers had too many drops. Clemson has a chance to bounce back in a few weeks against Florida State, but for now they are a disappointment.
South Alabama
I don’t know man. I was pretty confident that they were gonna beat Tulane last week, but clearly I was wrong. That game was never even competitive. I hope that they can bounce back in the coming weeks, but for now I am a little disapointed.
Ohio State
They didn’t play bad, but they didn’t play good. Indiana is among the worst teams in the Big Ten, and the Buckeyes only put up 23 points. I was expecting HUGE things from their offense, and they did not show up. The defense impressed me though, only giving up 3 points. I expect them to bounce back at some point, but now I am starting to think that Penn State may have overtaken them as the top threat to Michigan.
Upset Alert
#23 Kansas State vs Troy – Troy could be the top team in the Group of 5 this year, and Kansas State is still working in a lot of inexperienced players. Don’t sleep on the Trojans.
#25 Wisconsin at Washington State – WASU has a really good QB, and I think could be a low-key really good team out of the Pac 12. Can Wisconsin keep up with WASU’s offense? We’ll see.
#11 Oregon at Texas Tech – The Red Raiders laid an egg against Wyoming last week, but I have confidence that they can bounce back and be the team I thought they were at the beginning of the season.
